Some people might say that the most important quality a person can possess is kindness, because it allows us to connect with others and make the world a better place. Others might argue that intelligence or creativity is the most important quality, because it allows us to solve problems and innovate. Still others might say that resilience or determination is the most important quality, because it allows us to overcome challenges and achieve our goals. What do you think is the most important quality a person can possess, and why?
Thank you for the question, Grace. I believe the most important quality a person can possess is authenticity. When I reflect on my day, week, month, or year (as I did this week), one question I ask myself in some form or other is if my actions lined up with my values. In my experience, when I act according to my values I'm happier, make better decisions, and I am kinder. In other words, my best qualities naturally arise when I am the most authentic version of who I am and want to be. Authenticity is also a great quality for a "bad" person, or a person I don't want to interact with, to have--if they're being who they really are, I'll find out quickly that they're not someone I want to have as a friend, business associate, or romantic partner.
