Working hard for something we don't care about is called Stress, Working hard for something we care about is called Passion. What's something you're passionate about?
I love this question! This distinction is all the more true with ADHD. Doing what we love sends a rush of dopamine through our brains, encouraging a hyperfocus, often allowing us to complete work of days or weeks within hours. On the other hand, a boring task not only stresses us, but is sometimes neurologically impossible for our brains to tackle, regardless of will or difficulty. I would love to say writing is my passion, but the truth is more complicated. On the one hand, especially when writing ADHD fantasy, or fantasy in general - thrill and inspiration immediately arise from bringing into life worlds, characters and plots. Ideas flow and genuine excitement propels the typing fingers. Sometimes, however, problems arise - plot inconsistencies, for instance; self-doubt creeps in, or simply boring tasks are involved: editing might be one. On the other hand, even had writing involved only magic, it would eventually get old to a constantly dopamine-seeking brain. Luckily, building an indie author business involves much more than writing. It requires designing, branding, copywriting, website building, social media posting, guest blogging, audience building... - a whole plethora of varied activities all involving creativity - the life substance of dopamine. In short... one thing I'm passionate about is writing and indie publishing my ADHD fantasy fiction!
